Abstract

Health care-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) cause significant pain and suffering to those who experience and live with these often-preventable wounds. Ageing skin is at an increased risk of developing pressure injuries due to thinning, dryness and the person’s co-morbidities.In addition, if the elderly sustain a pressure injury, their disease burden increases, similary affecting their risk of developing another pressure injury. Further, treating a HAPI is significant, costing up to $90,000 CAD for one wound. Thus, preventing HAPIs across health-care communities of care needs to be a priority, including long-term care (LTC).
